A few months ago, I published a video about how to set-up a Karaoke System Using YouTube and Your Existing Surround Sound System. Let’s take a quick look at my previous video: here:  https://youtu.be/XYv75v4ljA8

Since then, I’ve been getting questions about how to do the same thing using a Smart TV and a Sound Bar. And I decided to create this video because I realize that nowadays, Smart TVs and Sound Bars are very popular and I think we should take advantage of those gadgets.

Also, by using a Smart TV and a Sound Bar, it eliminates the need for a Streaming Device like Roku or Google Chromecast and a YouTube player like a tablet or Smart Phone because your Smart TV essentially becomes your Streaming Device and your YouTube player.

5 Things you need to have to turn your Smart TV and Sound Bar into a High Quality Home Karaoke System:

1.    Sound Bar – From the title itself, you need a sound bar for this set-up. For the purposes of this video, I am using an existing mini sound bar that I already have. It may not be the best quality sound bar but it works for this purpose. My sound bar has the Audio Auxilliary 3.5mm input which works for this set-up.

2.    Smart TV – Again, from the title itself, you need a Smart TV that has a YouTube app and can play a video directly from YouTube. What I have here is a 42-inch Samsung Smart TV. You can use any Smart TV that you already have. The Smart TV nowadays usually comes with an Optical Audio output that look like this.

3.    Mixer – You will need a mixer that has a Microphone and audio inputs. This is what I have. I bought this from Amazon for about $70. It already comes with 2 microphones. It only has RCA and Auxilliary inputs. If you can find a mixer that takes in a Digital/Optical audio input, that would be better so you can take advantage of the great audio quality.

4.    Microphone – You can use any standard microphone that you have as long as it is compatible with your mixer.  In my case I am using the ones that came with the Mixer.

5.    Digital to Analog Audio Converter – You will need this if your mixer only has RCA or Auxilliary Connector inputs. This converter will convert the digital audio from your TV before it sends the signal to the mixer and then to your Sound Bar.

The General Idea on how this Home Karaoke System works:

The Smart TV plays the video and at the same time sends the Karaoke Music Audio part to the mixer via a Digital to Analog Audio Converter. The mixer also takes the vocal input from the microphones, and then combines the Karaoke Music and the vocal and sends that combined sound to the Sound Bar. The Sound Bar then plays the Karaoke Music and your voice simultaneously with the lyrics on the Smart TV. Sounds complicated right, but it is actually very easy to understand once you finish this set-up!!!

Step-By-Step Set-up.

Now, I am going to show you how to set-up these gadgets:

First, ensure that all devices that you are trying to connect (Smart TV, Sound Bar, Mixer) are turned off for safety reasons.

Connecting The TV to the Mixer

1.    Take the Optical Audio Cable and connect the one end to the Optical Audio output of your TV.

2.    Take the other end of the cable and connect it to the Optical Input of the mixer.

3.    Using 3.5mm Auxilliary connector, take the one end of the connector and connect it to the Auxilliary output of the Audio Converter.

4.    Connect the other end of the cable to the Sound Bar.

5.    At this stage, your TV is now ready to send a Karaoke Music audio to the Sound bar.

Connecting The Microphone

6.    Simply connect the microphone to one of the microphone slots of the mixer.

Changing the Smart TV Audio Settings

Now, this Digital to Analog Audio Converter only supports PCM Audio format. So I need to change the settings of the Smart TV so that it outputs the audio in PCM format. This part is done differently depending on your TV model. In this Samsung Smart TV that I have this is how I do it….

How To Test The System:

7.    Power up all devices.

8.    Open the YouTube App in your Smart TV.

9.    Search for the Karaoke Song that you want to sing.

10.  And there you go! The video and lyrics shows up in the TV. The Sound bar plays the Karaoke music and my voice. Let’s try it:

Streaming from a Phone?

So that’s it, guys!!! Now, if you have a Smart Phone, usually a Smart TV allows you to cast a YouTube video to a Smart TV. So you can do that as well so you can easily and conveniently use your YouTube app on your phone search and play Karaoke Music. While this is not required, I find this method very convenient and easy.
